HERO Odyssey of
the Mind Team Advances to
World Competition for the Second Year!
San Antonio HERO sent three teams to the Odyssey of
the Mind State Tournament in Houston, TX on April 5th. Two teams
competed in the middle-school division, one in "The Wonderful Muses"
problem (which is in the Classics category), the other in "The
Eccentrics" (in the Performance category.) The third team was in the
high school division in the "Dino Stories:" problem (Technical
category.) All three teams have had a fantastic time all year
working to solve a long-term problem and developing their
spontaneous problem-solving skills and were thrilled to show off
what they had come up with at the tournament.
The Wonderful Muses team placed 5th in the long-term problem and
6th overall. The Eccentrics team placed 4th in the long-term problem
and 9th overall. The Dino Stories team members, who had set a goal
of doing all they could to advance to Worlds, placed 1st in the
long-term problem and 2nd overall, which earned them the spot at
Worlds they had worked so hard for.
World Finals is scheduled for May 31-June 3 at the University of
Maryland in College Park, MD. Everyone on the team is looking
forward to this next step. Five of the six team members participated
in Worlds last year, so know what an incredible experience it is,
more of a celebration than a competition. The team members are Cody
Bates, John Doyle, Juliana Hernandez, Katie Kuplack, Ellie Pavliska
and Galen Schmidt, all guided by coach Susan Smylie. Help the team
travel to Worlds by donating now!
